Local Business Spotlight: Hazel Hill Chocolates

Ever since Denise posted Being an Intentional Topekan, I’ve really tried to follow her lead and make a concerted effort to shop local. This weekend Brandon and I stopped by Hazel Hill Chocolates – a homemade chocolate shop located downtown at 7th and Kansas.

One step in the shop, and I immediately felt like a kid again, staring wide-eyed at all of the beautiful handmade candies neatly displayed in cases all over the shop. My husband and I spent our first 10 minutes in the store trying to take in everything Hazel Hill has to offer – a large variety of truffles, hills, stacks, clusters and fudges, various chocolate dipped fruits, and hand-dipped caramel apples. We chatted with store owners, Nick and Terri Xidis, and slowly started making some selections.

We decided to share a Snickers-dipped caramel apple, and each selected a truffle (Amaretto for me and Cappacino for Brandon), and then threw in a haystack for good measure. Everything was so delicious. But, I have to say the Snickers apple is really over-the-top! I’m going to have to make another trip next weekend … if I can last that long.

I would highly recommend Hazel Hill to anyone!

  1. Hmmm…. Hazel Hill chocolates… while I’ve not made it into the shop (it’s going on my list!), I’ve reaped the benefit of others going and bringing back the goodies!

  2. Oh yeah Hazel Hill is awesome! Everything I get there is delicious. Even the Hazel Hills. Hot outside try their frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate on a stick! Do i really need to say anymore!

  3. I have only heard great things about Hazel Hill. That is on the list of places to go to. Depending upon how big the space is, Hazel Hill may be a cool place to have local artists display their work. Unless, they do this already

  4. I love Hazel Hill Chocolates! Every time I visit… I go for the chocolate dipped strawberries. They also have the best sugar free chocolates selection around.

  5. Hazel Hill has great candy. Don’t have a lot of money? For one dollar you can get a chocolate, vanilla, or lemon ‘Thing’. Yes, that’s the name – Thing. They are a very moist, rich cake-like center covered with milk or white chocolate. Definitely worth the trip. Today they were giving out free samples of chocolate peanut butter fudge. Excellent!

  6. Try a Snickers apple — pure heaven! A word of caution though — they are big and rich, so you may want to share one with a buddy. I can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet — your’re missing out, people!!!

  7. I visited Hazil hill today. They were very busy, and nothing had a price where you could see it. Some items didn’t have tags that told what it was, either. It would have saved a lot of time, to know what things cost. We didn’t want to wait in line to find out what the price was, just to find out if we needed to start over each time, if we didn’t want to pay that amount. So, we just left. Everything did look & smell great! Too bad we didn’t have the time to ask, nor did they have the time to tell us all the prices. We would have made it out of the store with something delicious, otherwise, I’m sure of it. Maybe another time.

Sorry your Hazel Hill experience yesterday wasn’t the best. Although I don’t work there, I did place a very large order for Valentine’s Day and know that the holiday has them very busy. Probably their biggest day of the year. Hopefully your next trip will be better… and I know Hazel Hill reads this blog, so potentially you’re offering them suggestions to help improve for next time.

For what it’s worth, I sent my husband to Daddycakes yesterday to pick up a couple of homemade cupcakes. But given the timing, and my spur of the moment craving for a cupcake, they were completely out of stock of all cupcakes except margarita-flavored, and I really had my heart set on something chocolate. Although I was a little disappointed, I know the cupcakes will taste that much better next time around!

Hopefully you’ll have the same experience with Hazel Hill. Definitely don’t give up on them, I promise you won’t regret it!

    All the best,

    Alissa

  9. S.B.,

Thanks for the feedback on the pricing and labeling. We’ll work on making some improvements.

Also, sorry about the wait. Unfortunately, you caught us on the busiest day of the year. I hope we’ll get the chance to see you again.
