Fun with a Hustler

Today I spent a couple of hours mowing my parent’s lawn. It’s something I use to do a lot of when I was younger, but this time it was much more fun. Since my regular lawn mowing days, my parents have upgraded to a much nicer, much faster Hustler zero turning radius mower. Let me tell you, this baby kicks ass. What use to be a full-day project (mowing several acres) was trimmed down to just over two hours of time, and it was so fun the time flew by.

The navigation of the mower was quite a bit different from the tradition riding lawn mower systems that I was used to, so it took me a good half-hour before I felt comfortable getting in close and trimming around trees. But once you get the hang of it, it feels really natural and the controls just become an extension of your arms.

After I finished up, my dad grabbed Leo for a quick ride. The blades were dis-engaged, so it was pretty safe and relatively quiet. Leo seemed to have a pretty good time. In another 10 or 15 years he’ll be the one out there mowing the yard. Of course, by then the Hustler will probably be considered pretty lame. Who knows, maybe the next revolution of mowers will be operated remotely or by flying saucer or completely automated….
