First Friday was a Success!

My opening reception for “Thoughts, Dreams and Pretty Things” at Creative Art Photography & Gallery was a success! The First Friday following was strong; we had a steady crowd from 5:45 to 8:30. I was fortunate enough to meet many of the communities’ art advocates, and discuss Topeka’s renewed enthusiam for the arts.

Visit the Thoughts, Dreams & Pretty Things Gallery to see photos from the opening.

I also sold my Yarn Bin Series and Cinco de Mayo. It was great to see so many people that were already familiar with my work and that had been following my art career. It was the first time I realized that I have several people that are starting to collect my work.

Thanks to everyone that attended my opening! Especially Bonnie & Bob Green, who traveled all the way from Kansas City to see my artwork!

My First Friday Art Show Debut

Cinco de MayoI will have my First Friday debut tomorrow at Creative Art Photography & Gallery, 307 S. Kansas, Topeka, KS from 6-8 pm. “Thoughts, Dreams and Pretty Things” will have 15 new paintings on display.

We (Lyn, Brandon & I) just finished hanging the show tonight, and I am pretty excited by how the show looks. My new representational abstract pieces seemed to intermingle well with the purely abstract pieces, creating what I think is my strongest show to date.

Topeka’s Thriving Art Scene

Never have I been as proud of the Topeka art scene, as I was on Friday at the Art Walk! I began my evening at Freda and Maude hanging a few more pieces of donated artwork for our Concealed/Revealed Art Auction to benefit the YWCA.

From there I walked three doors down to The Collective to review new work by Barbara Waterman-Peters. As always, it was inspiring. Each of the characters in her “At the Event” showing, has their own expression that helps bring the imagery to life. My favorite piece featured a young woman wearing a green shirt and clown makeup. Her expression is so natural and comfortable, I felt as though I could be looking into a mirror and seeing myself in another life.

From there, my husband Brandon and I met up with our friend and framer, Josh Pattie of J & Co. Frameshop.  We walked a couple doors down to Beachamp’s to view “Christian Themes in Modern American Art II”. The show featured religious imagery created by Brian Jekel and Michaels Buesking. After that we headed on down to Glass Expressions at the end of the block, to admire all of the beautiful glass work.

Brandon and I then drove downtown to visit Topeka’s two newest galleries, Creative Photography & Gallery and The Uptown both located in downtown Topeka. Of all the gallery settings, these two excite me the most! I love that both galleries recognize the importance of bringing culture back to the downtown area – they also have young ownership, fresh ideas and motivation, and tons of potential for the future.

I want to give a special shout out to Creative Photography & Gallery because it’s founded by two ladies that I attended classes with at Washburn. I spent a lot of class time collaborating and discussing projects with Lyn Weichert, in particular. It’s great to watch these two women creating their own destiny and doing their part to revitalize the downtown area - I hope that I will have the opportunity to show my artwork there soon!

Finally, Brandon and I ended our night of art-seeing by visiting the Washburn University Art Department to view Phill Hall’s senior show. He had a variety of mediums on display, yet still managed a very cohesive, personal show. I walked away wondering if he had been planning this show throughout his college years – everything seemed so well thought out and connected. I really enjoyed Phill’s pieces with plexiglass. The plexi utilization and painting technique are far different than my own, and underscore the realm of possibilities that this non-tradional medium has to offer.

First Friday – A Night Full of Openings!

Tomorrow night promises to be one of the best First Friday Art Walks to-date in Topeka!

– A new gallery called Creative Art Photography & Gallery, owned and managed by Lyn Weichert and Jennifer Lutz-Michaels, will make its debut.
– Phill Hall is capping off his college experience with his Senior Show on display in the gallery space at the Washburn University Art Department.
– The Collective will feature new artwork by Barbara Waterman Peters.
– And of course, there is the preview of all the artwork that was donated for the Concealed/Revealed art auction at Freda and Maude’s. I have donated two paintings for the event, Bloom #3 and Easter Candy.

Put on a jacket and come out for a night of art that you won’t soon forget!

Getting ready for the 4th Annual Concealed/Revealed Art Auction

Artwork up for bids at the Concealed/Revealed Art AuctionYesterday the Concealed/Revealed committee organized and hung this year’s artwork donations at Freda and Maude. Currently there are 37 works of art on display that will be auctioned off at the end of the month with all procedes going to the YWCA Battered Women’s Task Force of Topeka. I’d imagine we will end up with over 50 donated peices, after all of the artwork is submitted. There is a nice variety of mediums represented: paintings, prints, photographs, glass orbs and vases, ceramics, jewelry and a gourd mask by Dolores Purdy Corcoran.
Stop by Freda and Maude this First Friday to preview all of the artwork up for bid! Also walk down the block to see the Barbara Waterman Peters artwork at The Collective – she always has a great show!
